Mocktail Motivation Monday: 6 Ways To Make Dry January WAAAAAY Easier
Are you doing Dry January? I am!
But I’m no Dry January virgin (see what I did there? Virgin…drinks…? No? Okay. Moving on….)
Having done Dry January before, I know how to set myself up for success so that the month will be over in two shakes of a lamb’s (mock)tail! And I’d love to help you succeed at meeting your Dry January goals!
Here Are My Best Tips For Acing Dry January!
Don’t quit your evening drink. If you have a habit of drinking a few (or many) evenings a week, don’t give that up. You’ll find yourself milling around the kitchen, opening cabinets with a “hmmm, what do I want?” look on your face—and chances are, you just might be subconsciously looking for your missing glass of vino.
Win by stocking up on mocktails, or nonalcoholic beers and wines, that you’ll actually look forward to drinking. Then, pour even before your start missing your nightly libation.
Hide the booze. Not having alcohol in your house will make it way easier to avoid temptation. Ask a loved one to hang on to your alcohol stash if you think you’ll be tempted to cheat.
Hang with friends who “get you.” If you’ve told your friends you’re not drinking, and they INSIST, then maybe you need to take a breather on going on with that crew for the next month. It’s only thirty days after all! (And maybe you can use that time to get more supportive friends!)
Have mocktail, will travel. Bring mocktails with you to social gatherings, when appropriate. I’ve brough mocktails to people’s houses, and even the drinkers are often intrigued enough to swap one of their “leaded” beverages for “unleaded.” You’ll be doing yourself, and others, a favor.
Download a Dry January app. People who use Dry January apps are more likely to meet their goals. When you use an app, you’re less likely to feel like you’re slogging though it alone—and that sense of belonging can keep you on track like nothing else. (We’ll be reviewing Dry January apps very soon!).
Use your imagination. When you plan to go somewhere that everyone will be drinking, or even if you just plan to stay home, take a minute to visualize yourself in that place—without booze. What will you be doing? Who will you be talking to? What will you like about the scene? What will you do when the moment arrives that someone offers you a drink?
You’ll say “no thanks,” right?
Athletes mentally rehearse their big plays, speakers run through their speeches in front of the mirror, and YOU win at Dry January when you visualize and execute your plan.
To Win Dry January, Plan In Advance
Some people can coast through Dry January without breaking a sweat. But if you’re not looking forward to a month without alcohol, know that you’re not alone.
A little bit of planning is going to help you stick to your goals.
